A Few Selected Pieces

“Hard Metal Cantüs” (2020)

Album design for American composer and electric guitar soloist D.J. Sparr.

D.J.’s music has been performed and commissioned by numerous ensembles, including the Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, eighth blackbird, & the Dayton Philharmonic.

This album is about places, real and imagined. The trajectory of a melody lost among church towers. The cardinal points that orient human activity. The multiple dimensions of superstring theory and a melody from a nearby universe. The idea of a place – the afterlife – and a piece of music written as a gesture to help my old dog Lloyd navigate the bardo. And then our internal place, our world within our own mind, which if you learn to control yourself, you become irresistible… and it also features a nod to Frank Zappa and Henry Cowell.

The Book of Salt (2019)

A fun little personal project, “The Book of Salt” is a page from a fictional holy book that I gave as a gift to visitors to our old Burning Man camp.

The text was produced by training karpathy’s “char-rnn” neural net on passages from ancient holy books that featured the desert or visionary prophetic experiences. After a lot of hand-editing to the output I ended up with some strange verses that felt ominously resonant with the event…
